Is Germany Affordable for International Students?
Germany is uniquely affordable because most public universities charge no tuition — even for international students. The main exception is Baden-Württemberg, which charges €1,500/semester for non-EU students. All students pay a semester contribution of €150-350 which usually includes a public transport pass. The biggest cost is living expenses: you must prove €11,904/year in a blocked account for your visa. When comparing total degree costs, a 2-year German master's can cost €25,000-35,000 total — a fraction of equivalent UK or US programmes.
Work Rights for Students in Germany
International students in Germany can work 120 full days or 240 half days per year without a special work permit. Student jobs ("Werkstudent" positions) often pay €12-18/hr and provide valuable industry experience. After graduation, the job-seeker visa gives 18 months to find employment related to your degree. Germany's minimum wage is €12.41/hr (2025). Many STEM and engineering students find well-paid part-time positions with German companies during their studies.
