Every year, millions of students dream of studying abroad — but the financial path is often foggy. Universities publish tuition figures, but the full cost of living, visa fees, health insurance, flights, and emergency buffers rarely appear in one place. Families make major life decisions based on incomplete information, and many students arrive at their destination only to discover they've underestimated their budget by thousands of dollars.
AbroadCost was founded to solve this problem. We provide accurate, transparent, and comprehensive cost estimates so families can plan with confidence. No surprises, no hidden costs — just clear, actionable financial planning for international education.
Our mission is simple: make study abroad budgeting as easy and transparent as booking a flight. Every student, regardless of background, should be able to calculate the true cost of their international education in under 60 seconds.
How AbroadCost Started
AbroadCost began as a side project in late 2025, born out of frustration with the lack of transparent cost information for international students. Founder Syed Roman Bin Walid ("Roman"), who has spent years helping students navigate study-abroad budgets and visa paperwork, noticed that most "cost calculators" online were either outdated, overly simplistic, or driven by university marketing rather than student needs.
What started as a simple spreadsheet shared with friends quickly grew into a full website with 40+ country guides, comparison tools, and a privacy-first calculator. AbroadCost is built and maintained solo by Roman — there's no research department or editorial staff behind it, just one person doing the research, writing, and development.
We are not backed by a university consortium, an admissions agency, or a loan provider. AbroadCost is independent. That means the only incentive is to give you the most accurate, unbiased information possible.

- Government Immigration Sites: Visa fees, health insurance requirements, and proof of funds guidelines from official sources
- Current Market Data: Rent prices, food costs, and transportation from Numbeo, Expatistan, and local real estate listings
- Student Surveys: Real spending data from current international students (updated quarterly)
- Exchange Rate APIs: Real-time forex data with historical context for accurate conversion
Data Currency: Last major update: April 2026. We review and update all figures quarterly. Visa requirements and fees reflect official guidance current as of April 2026.
Editorial Independence
AbroadCost is 100% free and independent. We do not charge students, parents, or universities for access to our calculators or guides. We are not owned by an admissions agency, a loan provider, or a university consortium. No one pays us to rank a destination higher or recommend a specific school.
Our revenue model is simple and transparent: we plan to fund the project through display advertising and carefully selected affiliate partnerships for services that genuinely help students (such as currency transfer providers or travel insurance). When we include an affiliate link, we clearly label it. When we recommend a destination, it's based on data, not commissions.
This independence matters because the study abroad industry is full of biased advice. Many "cost comparison" sites are run by agencies that steer students toward universities that pay them commissions. We don't do that. Our only incentive is to help you make the most informed financial decision possible.
