Data Sources & Methodology

    Transparency matters. Here's exactly how AbroadCost calculates study abroad cost estimates, where our data comes from, and what our limitations are.

    How We Calculate Costs

    Every country page on AbroadCost uses three preset tiers — Budget, Standard, and Comfort — each with distinct values for tuition, living expenses, housing, visa fees, insurance, flights, and setup costs.

    These presets are manually curated from multiple sources (listed below) and reflect typical ranges for international students in 2025-2026. We favor government data and university-published advisories over user-reported data, though we cross-reference with Numbeo for living costs.

    The calculator computes totals using this formula:

    Total = (Tuition × Duration) + (Living × Months) + (Housing × Months) + One-time Fees + Buffer%

    Where One-time Fees = Visa + Insurance + Flights + Setup, and Buffer% is a user-adjustable contingency (default: 10%).

    Update Frequency

    Cost presets are reviewed and updated quarterly, with major updates at the start of each academic year cycle (July/August for Northern Hemisphere, January/February for Southern Hemisphere).

    Exchange rates reflect approximate market rates as of February 2026. Users can override exchange rates and all cost inputs in the calculator.

    Limitations

    • Not financial advice. AbroadCost provides informational estimates only. Always verify costs with your target university and local immigration authority.
    • Averages, not guarantees. Actual costs vary by city, lifestyle, programme, and individual circumstances.
    • Exchange rate fluctuations. Currency conversions use approximate rates that change daily.
    • Country-level data only. City-level cost variations can be significant (e.g., London vs Manchester, New York vs Midwest).
